Completion and Acceptance of the Green Mining Filling Test Project at Working Face 5107 of Xihé Coal Industry

Recently, the green mining pilot project involving overburden strata separation‑filling at the 5107 working face of Xihé Coal Industry Co., Ltd. in Zhongyang, Lüliang, Shanxi Province, has passed its completion acceptance, marking a new milestone in the expansion of green coal mining at Datuhe Coal Mine.
The project commenced construction in July 2024, entered joint trial operation in May 2025, and from May to October 2025 implemented simultaneous mining and backfilling at the 5107 working face. From the start of extraction through to pre‑completion acceptance, the monitoring agency conducted a total of 37 observations at the surface displacement monitoring stations associated with the 5107 working face. During the acceptance process, leaders from the municipal and county energy bureaus, together with an expert panel, carefully reviewed the mine’s reports on the project’s design and construction progress. They addressed questions raised by the attending officials and experts regarding the project’s design features, key technical aspects, and the results of surface rock‑mass movement monitoring. The acceptance team highly commended the project’s performance, noting that surface deformation remained below the permissible limits for Class I buildings and structures, thereby achieving the intended goal of mitigating subsidence through grouting and backfilling to protect such structures. The panel unanimously approved the project’s acceptance, providing critical technical support for subsequent “three‑under” mining operations. At the conclusion of the acceptance meeting, Zhao Kanghong, General Manager of Shanxi Datuhe Coking Co., Ltd., emphasized that, as a pilot site for “three‑under” coal‑bearing strata filling‑and‑mining, the Xihé Coal Industry 5107 working face should establish a dedicated long‑term post‑mining settlement monitoring file spanning one year. Based on the monitoring data and any issues encountered during construction, further optimization of grouting pressure and slurry mix ratios is required, along with coordinated scheduling of mining and grouting activities. Additionally, efforts should be accelerated to translate technological advances into practical applications and extend their use to other “three‑under” coal‑bearing areas within the mine. Finally, he urged the mine to strictly adhere to safety red lines, rigorously implement relevant codes and standards, and strive to become a model green‑mining facility in the Lüliang region.
Xihe Coal Industry, the only coal mine in Zhongyang County undertaking a pilot project for “three‑under” pressure‑reducing backfill mining, uses solid waste—coal gangue—as its primary raw material and employs overburden decoupling‑layer backfilling technology to extract coal while achieving subsidence reduction. The entire backfilling system is equipped with an intelligent control system that automates everything from on‑site gangue crushing, raw‑material proportioning, and slurry mixing to grouting pipeline transport and pressure regulation, enabling smart, visualized backfill mining with automatic slurry formulation and automated pressure adjustment. This breakthrough in technological barriers has advanced the integrated development of intelligent mine operations and green coal extraction. Upon completion, the project will annually process 600,000 tons of coal gangue, reclaim at least 330,000 tons of coal resources overlain by the 220 kV Jinluo Substation’s No. 4 and No. 5 coal seams, delivering both economic and ecological benefits.
Green coal mining is a key component of Shanxi Province’s comprehensive pilot program for an energy‑revolution reform; it represents a priority option for building a new, harmonious energy‑supply system that balances human needs with environmental sustainability, and it is also an essential requirement for the high‑quality development of the coal industry. Since 2022, Xihé Coal Industry, guided by its overall strategic vision and adhering to the principle of “conserving resources while reducing consumption and enhancing efficiency,” has championed a technology‑driven approach. The company has actively promoted green mining techniques such as pillarless mining and backfilling mining, and has launched site‑specific pilot projects tailored to local conditions. To date, it has advanced pilot initiatives including pillarless mining with dense borehole roof cutting and gob‑side entry retaining in working faces 5104, 5105, and 5207, as well as a green mining pilot project utilizing overburden separation‑layer backfilling in working face 5107, gradually shifting coal development toward a green‑mining paradigm. The successful implementation of Xihé Coal Industry’s current trial project on under‑mining pressure‑bearing backfilling mining aligns closely with Lüliang City’s 14th Five‑Year Plan, which emphasizes deepening coordinated emission reductions and advancing the prevention and control of solid‑waste pollution. This initiative provides both theoretical and technical foundations for fostering synergistic development between coal‑based solid‑waste resource utilization and green coal mining, thereby supporting Lüliang City’s sustainable economic growth and ecological preservation.
